Mayo reached the All Ireland SFC final in 2006 after a spectacular run which saw them clinch a Connacht title and overcome Dublin in an all-time classic in the All Ireland semi-final.
However, as is much too often the story for Mayo football folk, they came up short on the final day.
Kerry ran out winners in Croke Park on a scoreline of 4-15 to 3-05, a hammering by any means of measurement. Colm Cooper, Kieran Donaghy and Declan O’Sullivan all notched 1-02 each en route to preventing Mayo from getting their hands on Sam Maguire for the first time since 1951.
The wait to scale the steps of the Hogan Stand on the third Sunday of September still goes on in the county, with each new season bringing with it a refreshed sense of hope.
In 2006, however, having overcome the Dubs in an epic clash to reach the final, Mayo supporters really believed that this would be their year. That titanic battle with Dublin will most fondly be remembered as the day the men from the West warmed up in front of Hill 16, causing pre-match pandemonium in Croker.
In the final itself, high-flying Kerry dominated throughout. Leading by six points at the half-time interval, the Kingdom saw out the remainder of the game comfortably with a 13-point gap at the full-time whistle.
