Mayo and Dublin must do it all over again this evening in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final replay. The defending champions were frustrated by a resolute defensive effort from the Connacht side two weeks ago, with the Dublin team only managing to score nine points themselves.
While the duel between Lee Keegan and Diarmuid Connolly made all the headlines, there was much more to the Mayo rearguard, and Stephen Rochford will be hoping for more of the same today.
We have taken a look at the numbers, courtesy of Sure’s Season of Statistics, to see who was the most effective back on the field for Mayo.
Keith Higgins led the way with 24 possessions, followed closely by Lee Keegan with 21, and Patrick Durcan with 16.
The six men at the back conceded just four frees, which is an impressive disciplinary record, although it must be noted that referee Conor Lane let the game flow a lot.
The backs for the Connacht side won just four turnovers outright, but their work-rate forced Dublin out the field throughout the game, and pressured them into shots from unfavourable positions.
The below graphic tells the story.
