Sky Sports To Show Munster Hurling Championship Game Exclusively In 2017

Sky Sports GAA

The takeover is on! Okay, that is hyperbolic but today’s reports that Sky Sports are to show the Munster SHC game between Limerick and Clare is not going to universally popular.

It will be the first time they have shown a Munster Championship game live, but they did show the qualifier between the same two teams last year.

The British broadcaster recently extended their deal with the association to show more games exclusively as well as showing the All-Ireland semi-finals and finals along with RTÉ.

Sky’s involvement with the GAA has been controversial with many vocal critics, including RTÉ pundit Joe Brolly. While Sky showing qualifiers or early-round provincial ties that may not be televised otherwise is one thing, showing a Munster hurling clash is sure to re-start the debate as to whether they should be involved at all.

This is a controversy that will linger throughout the summer and, judging by some of the replies to John Fogarty and Jerome O’Connell, there are a lot of people unhappy about this development.

While people around the country won’t be able to tune in, there is a suggestion for one way for Limerick and Clare fans to get around this.
