All The Results From The Opening Matches Of The New GAA Season

We’re back, baby!

After an incredibly short off-season, 24 inter-county teams were laced up and out on the field today as the pre-season competitions kicked off.

With a dozen matches on the cards, it was a busy day in Munster and Leinster as the 2018 season began before the New Year’s Eve celebrations did.

In hurling, there was a good start to the campaign for the Clare hurlers – the Banner had a facile win over Kerry in LIT.

That capped off a good day for the Banner who also were victorious in the football, defeating Waterford by double scores – 2-18 to 1-09.

There were nine games in all in Leinster across both codes on a very busy December Saturday all over the province.

It was a good day for Carlow, who beat Wicklow in both codes, while Longford got the better of Louth in both hurling and football also.

The other headlines coming from the Meat hurlers, who defeated Antrim and Paul McLoughlin’s tenure as Wexford football manager got off to a disastrous start as the Slaney-siders were beaten by a mammoth 16 points against Offaly.

The last game on Saturday was the Munster Senior Hurling League clash between Limerick and Cork.

Star from the All-Ireland u-21 winning side Aaron Gillane got a goal for Limerick, but when Cork’s Jack O’Connor hit the net, the game was level  1-18 apiece heading into the closing stages.

However, a late goal from debutant Seamus Flanagan sealed the victory for John Kiely’s men as they emerged from Mallow with five points to spare.
