A huge game is in store for Cian O’Neill and Kildare as they travel to Derry to keep their season alive.
What:All Ireland Championship Football Qualifiers – Round 1
Who: Derry v Kildare
Where: Owenbeg, Derry
When: Saturday, June 9th at 3pm
Odds: Derry 13/10 Draw 15/2 Kildare 5/6
One of the more intriguing Round 1 fixtures of the qualifiers sees Derry host Kildare in Owenbeg.
The stadium was closed for repair work for the last number of months which led to Derry playing the majority of their league games in Celtic Park.
Both of these sides have had wretched seasons to date. Cian O’Neill has a massive job on his hands to instil any sense of confidence in his Kildare side which is on a dismal run of 12 consecutive defeats and who were embarrassed by a resurgent Carlow as they exited Leinster.
Things have hardly been better for the Ulstermen. Four years ago the Oak Leaf county went to battle in the Division 1 final against the mighty Dublin. Fast forward to 2018 and the side’s disgrace has been complete.
They will be playing Division 4 league football from next season and their defeat against Donegal in the Ulster Championship was as predictable as it was depressing.
There is so much at stake in this fixture for these two proud football counties. For one of them, their summer could be brought to a premature end and the recriminations will begin.
While both sides are in the doldrums right now, Kildare may have just gotten the wakeup call they have desperately needed in their defeat to Carlow.
Prediction: Kildare to win by 1-3 points
