Despite leading Cork to an All-Ireland semi-final earlier this summer, Kieran Kingston shocked a lot of people by leaving the position in the wake of the Rebel’s loss to Waterford in August.
Just after Kingston left the role, people like Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Pat Ryan (who many favoured to take over) declared that they would not let their names be put forward.
Now, reports in the Irish Examiner say that John Meyler has emerged as the lead candidate to take over Leeside for 2018.
Meyler, who managed the county’s u-21 hurlers this year, is excepted to be appointed as early as this week. He was also part of the back-room team for the seniors meaning such an appointment would be some continuation as the Munster champions look to build on from a good season.
Meyler also has plenty of inter-county experience: As well as being involved with a host of Cork teams down through the years, he has also been involved with Kerry, Wexford and Carlow.
