Hurling is one of the country’s greatest secrets. As our oldest sport, it’s a treasured game. It comes as part of our national obligation to spread the gospel to foreigners, explaining the sport to those unaware.
‘It’s A Park’s Life’, a show on RTÉ this evening, profiles Joey Towell, a former hurler with Dublin and indeed an All-Star.
Towell, from O’Devaney Gardens in Dublin, spends much of his time in the Phoenix Park, teaching foreigners the sport.
“It doesn’t matter what nationality you are, I’d talk to anyone.
“They mightn’t understand what you’re saying, I wouldn’t be fluent in Mandarin or anything. But just get a ball and a hurl and you’re talking anyway!”
This is well worth a watch, and the full show is on RTÉ 1 this evening at 20:30.
