With just under three weeks to go to the Munster Hurling Championship opening weekend, Cork have received a big blow with the news that centre-back Tim O’Mahony has broken his elbow.

The Newtownshandrum under-21 star sustained the elbow injury in the first half of his club’s Cork County Senior Hurling Championship match against Kanturk at the weekend.

John Meyler had been hoping that the injury would not be as bad as first feared but unfortunately it was confirmed on Monday night that Mahony’s elbow was broken.

Even though it’s still unclear the length the young star will remain sidelined for, it’s very unlikely that he will play any part in his county’s provincial campaign.

This will come as a setback to the Leesiders’ chances as Mahony’s performances were one of the few highlights to come out of a below par league campaign for the rebels.

It is now likely that Cork will turn to Mark Ellis to fill the void left by Mahony’s absence as the Millstreet man has great experience in the number six position for Cork.
