Dublin and Mayo have provided some cracking games in recent times. Everyone is hoping that they will provide another one in this weekend’s All-Ireland football final. Here we rank the Top 3.
3. Dublin 3-15 Mayo 1-14 – 2015
It was a game that Dublin had to pull out all the stops to beat Mayo. Mayo took a second half lead when Cillian O’Connor goaled. Lee Keegan dropped a point short as Mayo failed to kick on. Then Dublin sprung into life. Goals from Bernard Brogan and Philly McMahon put them in front, before Kevin McManamon sealed the deal with a late goal.
2. Mayo 0-19 Dublin 0-16 – 2012
This was a massive upset where Mayo, minus their captain Andy Moran were big underdogs facing the reigning All-Ireland champions. Mayo took a seven point lead at one stage 0-17 to 0-10. Dublin fought back and threw everything at Mayo but could not get in front. A fantastic David Clarke save from Bernard Brogan saw Mayo hold on but they would lose the All-Ireland final to Donegal.
1. Mayo 1-16 Dublin 2-12 – 2006
This was the game that had everything. The drama began when Mayo warmed up in front of Hill 16. Mayo then started well and took a lead before scores from Conal Keaney settled the Dubs. Dublin took a seven point lead early in the second half but would only score one point in the last 25 minutes. Ciarán McDonald put Mayo in front with a wonder score with minutes remaining. Mark Vaughan would miss two frees to level it for the Dubs.
It was a classic encounter that possessed all the great traits of Gaelic football.
