On Sunday evening, Wexford did the unthinkable by beating the Cats for the first time in the Leinster Championship since 2004.
In a mesmeric and thrilling game, the Yellowbellies were eventual winners of the game by three points, which placed Davy Fitzgerald’s charges into the Leinster Senior Hurling final for the first time since 2008, where they will face either Galway or Offaly on July 2nd in Croke Park.
To date, Wexford have achieved promotion to Division 1A of the League, beating Limerick, Galway and Kilkenny along the way- but the victory against Kilkenny in front of a packed Wexford Park was nothing less than special for the Model County and it undoubtedly topped everything so far this year, in what is already an unbelievably successful 2017 for the Slaneysiders.
Legendary Wexford GAA commentator, Liam Spratt who was sitting near Davy in his newly built “box within a box” at Wexford Park caught up with the Wexford manager after the game on Wexford’s local radio station, South East Radio.
“Davy Fitzgerald is standing on a chair waving to the crowd here.”
“I don’t care if there’s a ban, say something to the people of Wexford,” Spratt commented passionately.
After hesitation to reply at first remarking “I can’t talk” due to his 12-week-ban, Fitzgerald then passionately replied into the microphone with a message to all of the listening Wexford hurling fans.
“The people of Wexford – they deserve this victory.”
“That’s heart and guts and these boys have it in abundance!”

The way Fitzgerald spoke and his undying passion for succeeding was arguably what Wexford hurling has been missing for the past number of years. Without a doubt, he has instilled a sense of belief in this Wexford squad where they do not fear any side and certainly, it’s great to see the Wexford hurlers back competing with the best once again.
