Gearoid Hegarty lives to regret red card comments from last month

He was unlucky to be sent off today, but he does have previous…

Limerick drew with Clare in a game that was played at a mile a minute on Sunday, with the final score Clare 0-24 to Limerick’s 1-21.

Diarmaid Byrne’s late score levelled the game in injury-time, with the two sides to meet each other again in the Munster final.

Gearoid Hegarty, who is no stranger to issues with the referees, picked up a second yellow card for an alleged follow through with his hurl, and as a result he was sent off.

Many felt as though it was a very harsh sending off, with Hegarty himself clearly feeling as though the referee came to the wrong decision.

While the overwhelming consensus seems to be that Hegarty was hard done by with this decision, he will still be annoyed at himself for giving the ref the decision to make in the first place.

Speaking just over a month ago, he discussed how annoyed he was at himself for being sent off against Galway in February.

He said: “It was stupid. I was embarrassed. It’s a horrible feeling. I’ve never gotten a straight red before (with Limerick).

“We were in the game at the time and I felt like I was hurling really well at the time and then to be sent off around 45 minutes and have to watch the lads for the last 25 minutes knowing you’re after leaving your team-mates down, knowing you’re after leaving down everyone that’s after coming in to watch the game, my family were there watching it and it’s just awkward.

“You nearly don’t even want to go home and look them in the eye after doing something so stupid.”

He might be feeling similarly this evening, even if the ref did give him a raw deal.
