McHugh The Star As Na Fianna Power Past St. Sylvester’s In DSFC

Na Fianna 3-14

St. Sylvester’s 0-9

In the absence of county stars, Eoin Murchan and Jonny Cooper, fellow Dublin senior, Conor McHugh stood up as Na Fianna eased past St. Sylvester’s in the Dublin senior football championship at Parnell Park.

It didn’t take long for Na Fianna to make their mark on the game. With a little over a minute played Killian Deeley rose high to fetch a St. Sylvester’s kick-out before playing a quick ball into Conor McHugh. McHugh turned on a sixpence before his shot came back off the post, however, the Dublin player reacted quickest, pouncing on the rebound before firing to the net and giving the Mobhi Road men the perfect start.

Na Fianna quickly followed it up with two points from corner forward, David Lacey who pointed from a 45 and a close-range free to put them five points in front after five minutes.

St. Sylvester’s may have started slowly but they grew into the game with Michael McCarthy kicking three points in a row to cut the margin down to two, however, Na Fianna quickly grabbed a foothold of the game once more with two quickfire points through Deeley and McHugh before centre forward, Aaron Byrne rattled the net once more to put them into a commanding 2-4 to 0-3 lead.

Dessie Farrell’s men looked in total control as the Malahide men struggled to break them down with Glenn O’Reilly and Aengus Farrell both executing textbook blocks as St Sylvester’s looked to claw their way back into contention.

Further points from Lacey and McHugh put the Mobhi Road men into a commanding lead as the minutes ticked down towards half-time. Alex Wright kicked a nice point off his right to narrow the margin but it was quickly followed by another McHugh score to maintain Na Fianna’s nine-point lead at the break.

Na Fianna started the second-half as they finished the first with McHugh laying on O’Reilly to stretch their lead into double-figures. McCarthy pulled one back for the Malahide men but his work was undone almost immediately as McHugh brought his tally to 1-4 for the day with a lovely point of his left.

The game was firmly put to bed three minutes into the second half as Lacey was put through by Sean Caffrey before rounding the keeper and firing low to the net for Na Fianna’s third goal of the match.

McCarthy and Wright led the St. Sylvester’s charge but they were unable to force their way back into the game as Na Fianna defended excellently throughout.

Mark Hazley saw red for the Malahide men as the game entered the final ten minutes as Caffrey and O’Reilly (x2) knocked over successive scores. A dour evening for St. Sylvester’s got even worse in injury time when Jack Hazley received his marching orders for a strike.

In the end, Dessie Farrell’s men were far too strong as they strolled to a 14-point victory.
