Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes avoided jail time but has been ordered to do 180 hours of community service.
The centre back was back in court on Monday, less than 24 hours after being named Man of the Match in the defeat of Cork.
Hayes waited for Judge Dara Hayes’ verdict, which confirmed that a dangerous driving conviction triggered a suspended sentence that had previously been imposed for a separate offence, according to ClareLive.
The suspended jail term was imposed on Hayes after a jury convicted him on two counts of committing violent disorder inside and outside a Limerick nightclub in 2019.
Judge Hayes said the dangerous driving offence, in which the five-time All-Ireland winning hurler was driving 55kph over the 100kph speed limit, was not a repeat of the violent public disorder.
Hayes received suspended prison sentences of 18 months and two years in 2023. The judge said: “The triggering offence (dangerous driving) while serious is not related to the nature or the severity of the offending of the original offences (violent disorders).
“They were committed over five years ago, there is nothing before the court to suggest that the respondent has engaged in any such behaviour since.”

The judge told Hayes that he would be brought back before a court if he didn’t complete his 180 hours of community service. He was further ordered to complete the community service within 12 months.
The judge also warned that “non-compliance” with the order would likely see Hayes in jail. Judge Hayes added: “If there is non-compliance, you will be brought back before the court and the (three month) sentence will be imposed.”
Hayes was one of six Limerick players to be named in this week’s GAA.ie Team of the Week following their dominant 16-point win.
A 3-23 to 1-16 victory ensured Nickie Quaid, Sean Finn, Mike Casey, Tom Morrissey and Cian Lynch join Hayes in the Team of the Week.
