Sunday will see Tyrone and Dublin go head-to-head in the biggest footballing clash of the year to see who will be crowned All Ireland champions. Both teams are littered with talent but which player will be named Footballer of the Year? We take a look at the top contenders.
Name: Ciarán Kilkenny
Credentials: Kilkenny has been the beating heart of the forward unit that has been ruthless and efficient all summer. The Castleknock man has scored 2-21 in his six championship appearances and has played a role in many more scores. His cleverness on the ball as well as his physicality have made him near-impossible to mark this summer.
Tyrone must quieten his impact as Mayo did in last year’s final if they are to have any chance of lifting the Sam Maguire.
Name: Brian Fenton
Credentials: Fenton has dominated the midfield battle in every game this season and has been one of Dublin’s stand out performers alongside Kilkenny. He’s aerial ability, distribution and work rate have all been superb this summer while he is also well capable of contributing long-range scores from play.
He lost this accolade to Lee Keegan last season but could 2018 be his year?
Name: Colm Cavanagh
Credentials: Cavanagh has rolled back the years with the standard of his performances this summer. He was part of the winning All Ireland squad in 2008 and has been doing his upmost to ensure his county returns to those heights once again. His defensive contribution will be a massive component of Tyrone’s game plan on Sunday.
Can he emulate the 2008 success of his brother Seán and take this award?
