Dublin To Host Bumper Double Homecoming Later This Month

It has been a momentous weekend for Dublin as the footballers claimed the elusive five-in-a-row, while on Sunday, the ladies footballers collected the Brendan Martin Cup for the third year-in-a-row.Β

As expected, a bumper homecoming has been planned that will celebrate the achievements of both teams, however, in an unusual move, the event won’t be held for another two weeks.

The official homecoming has been scheduled for Sunday 29th in Merrion Square from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

It is believed that the later date is to facilitate pre-planned holidays for players and other scheduling issues.

Lord Mayor Paul Mc Auliffe released a statement on Sunday evening congratulating Mick Bohan’s side on their historic three-in-a-row, their fourth-ever All-Ireland title.

The reigning champions overcame Galway on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-4 during a tough, if somewhat bizarre, final in front of a record-breaking crowd of 56,114 in Croke Park.

It took 23 minutes for the game’s first score but Dublin turned on the style in the second half, despite the wet and greasy conditions.

β€œIt has been a phenomenal weekend for the women and men of Dublin Gaelic Football with this three-in-a-row victory today and the historic five-in-a-row-win yesterday.

“Congratulations to the Dublin Ladies team of players, Mick Bohan and his management team, the background staff and the fans for their support over the campaign.

“This is a victory for two great teams, and with them in mind, and following consultation with the Dublin County Board and the Dublin Ladies Gaelic Association, Dublin City Council are delighted to announce that the Lord Mayor will celebrate these historic victories by staging a special, free family-friendly homecoming on Sunday 29th September from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Merrion Square.”
