Allianz Football League Round-Up: Leitrim Promoted From Division 4

The dreadful weather conditions didn’t hamper a hectic day in the Allianz Football League as Leitrim joined Derry in securing promotion to Division 3.

Sligo will take their place in the bottom division next year following a fifth loss, this time at the hands of Westmeath while in Division 2, Meath scraped past Kildare while Clare are left fighting to avoid a relegation battle thanks to their loss to Fermanagh.

Meanwhile, in the top division, there were further wins for Kerry and Dublin though neither team had it all their own way.

Allianz Football League Division 1

Roscommon 1-12 Dublin 2-14

A strong second-half showing from Dublin helped them to a five-point win over Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park this afternoon.

The Dubs stormed into an early lead, helped by a Con O’Callaghan goal but the home side responded superbly and drew the match level at half-time thanks to a goal from Cathal Cregg. However, a goal from Dean Rock in the 51st minute ensured that Dublin were allowed to finish the game strongly.

Kerry 0-17 Monaghan 0-13

A strong finish from Kerry in which they outscored Monaghan by six points to one, ensured a fifth successive win for Peter Keane’s side in Division 1 of the League.

The home side trailed by one with 10 minutes remaining but late scores from Sean O’Shea and Stephen O’Brien helped them to the four-point win. Kerry remain four points clear at the top of the table while Monaghan lie on two points, alongside Cavan.

Allianz Football League Division 2

Meath 1-9 Kildare 1-8

A late penalty from Barry Dardis secured a dramatic win for Meath against Kildare in Páirc Tailteann this afternoon. Kildare led by five points at the break thanks to a goal from Ben McCormack and carried a two-point lead into stoppage time until the penalty.

The result leaves the Royals in a strong position for promotion to Division 1 as Kildare remain in fourth on five points.

Fermanagh 0-12 Clare 0-9

Fermanagh left Clare fighting to avoid a relegation battle with their fifth win in Division 2 of the Allianz League in Enniskillen this afternoon.

The home side led by 0-9 to 0-6 at the break and extended that in the second half thanks to points from Sean Quigley and Aidan Breen. Clare missed two goal chances as they now face a battle with Cork, Tipperary, and Armagh to avoid the relegation playoff.

Allianz Football League Division 3

Sligo 1-10 Westmeath 3-12

Westmeath have registered their third win of the competition after a strong performance against Sligo in Collooney this afternoon.

The visitors led by two points at the break but it was goals from John Heslin, Ger Egan (penalty) and Noel O’Reilly that ensured their win as Sligo are relegated to Division 4 of the Allianz League.

Allianz Football League Division 4

Leitrim 1-7 London 0-9

Leitrim secured their promotion to Division 3 of the Allianz Football League following their fifth win of the competition. Shane Quinn’s 23rd goal was the difference in the in the one-point win over London.

Leitrim can now look forward to the Division 4 final against Derry in Croke Park.
