Kieran McGeeney’s Armagh side travel to Westmeath, looking to put questions about their coach’s future to bed.
What: All Ireland Championship Football Qualifiers – Round 1
Who: Westmeath v Armagh
Where: TEG Cusack Park, Mullingar
When: Saturday, June 9th at 7pm
Odds: Westmeath 5/2 Draw 15/2 Armagh 4/9
Kieran McGeeney was at a loss to explain the turnaround against Fermanagh. His Armagh side had defeated their rivals twice over the league campaign, one of which at Croke Park in the Division 3 final. But when it came to the Ulster Championship meeting between the two, it was Rory Gallagher’s Fermanagh outfit who squeezed the life out of Armagh.
Question marks are starting to be raised regarding McGeeney’s management of the county. Under his tenure, Armagh have failed to win a single Ulster Championship match, although they did manage to make a run through the qualifiers last season, eventually making it as far as the All Ireland quarter finals.
But if another strong qualifier performance is to be forthcoming, the Orchard county will really need to find their shooting boots and quick.
Westmeath represents another potential banana skin for Armagh and have at times played some nice football, particularly in the league campaign.
Armagh hit fifteen wides in their defeat to Fermanagh. A repeat of that particular stat could allow an unfancied Westmeath team the space to mount a surprise.
But I am going to back Armagh to find their footing in this year’s Championship and eventually see off a spirited Westmeath challenge.
Prediction: Armagh to win by 1-3 points
