Cavan and Wicklow battle it out in Aughrim on Saturday evening, with the former expecting an easy victory.
What: All Ireland Championship Football Qualifiers – Round 1
Who: Wicklow v Cavan
Where: Joule Park, Aughrim
When: Saturday, June 9th at 6pm
Odds: Wicklow 8/1 Draw 16/1 Cavan 1/12
A first Leinster victory in five years means that come what may in their upcoming qualifier against Cavan, this season has already been a success for Wicklow.
It didn’t matter that they were obliterated by the Dublin juggernaut simply because no other result was ever going to materialize. Wicklow will be happy if they can keep things tight in Aughrim against a quality Cavan side and hope that goalkeeper Mark Jackson can replicate the heroics of their victory over Offaly where the shot stopper pointed seven times and saved a penalty.
Cavan for their part have had to regroup after a humbling defeat to Donegal. Cavan have been one of the most consistent sides in the country over the past couple of years and a terrific league campaign has earned them division 1 football for next seasons. But the manner of their performance against Donegal was simply not good enough for the standard that they will soon be playing at.
A qualifier against Wicklow, however, provides the perfect opportunity for Mattie McGleenan’s men to repair their ego and the Ulster side should have far too much in hand for their hosts.
Prediction: Cavan to win -7 points
