John Mullane has revealed which county he thinks has the best fans in Ireland and, rather surprisingly, it’s not Waterford.

The De La Salle man holds a special place in the hearts of many Waterford supporters having won four Munster titles and five All-Stars whilst playing for the Déise. Although the Waterford faithful have stuck by their team through thick and thin over the years, Mullane has chosen another Munster side when it comes to picking the best fans in the country.

Speaking to‘s Hurling Debate Show, the iconic forward admitted that it is actually Cork who he thinks have the best supporters in the nation when it comes to hurling.

This admission may come as a surprise to many given that the rivalry between the Déise and the Rebels was at its height during Mullane’s time. The most well-known incident concerning Cork supporters and the 36-year-old once was when he gave them the two fingers in the 2003 Munster final before getting sent off in his county’s triumph the following year.

However, Mullane had only nice things to say about the Rebels supporters when asked:

“My relationship with Cork supporters, I think there’s a mutual respect. I’ve a mutual respect for them and they’ve probably the best supporters in the country.

“I think, someone remarked that they’re, what Dublin bring to the football, Cork bring to the hurling.”

Touching upon the topic of mutual respect, Mullane added that some of the controversy surrounding his relationship with the Cork supporters was simply part of the Cork-Waterford rivalry of the 2000s.

His comments largely hinge upon the wave of support that came out to cheer on Kieran Kingston’s men this summer as nearly 50,000 of their supporters made their way to Croke Park for their All-Ireland semi-final defeat to the Déise.

When it comes to surprising praise, Mullane’s acclaim for anything to do with Cork will be a slight shock to the system for a lot of GAA fans, but, according to him, like them or not, the Rebels have the best support in the country.
