The Fitzgibbon Cup is beginning to shape up nicely, with plenty of mouth-watering action still to come in the next few weeks in the college hurling tournament.

Round two will have only further added to the excitement – with plenty of excellent games taking place in the last 48 hours.

The action began on Wednesday where UCD saw off the challenge of UCC in Group A. Waterford’s DJ Foran scored 0-11, while Tadhg de Burca also impressed as the Dubliner college picked up a big win.

Tom Phelan got the goal as UCD ran out 1-15 to 0-13 victors. If UCD defeats CIT next week – then they will be guaranteed a home quarter-final.

IT Carlow came from behind earlier today to defeat NUI Galway on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-16.

DJ Carey’s side had trailed by four points at the break, but 2-02 from Jack Fagan swung the tie back in favour of last year’s beaten finalists.

Two wins from two in Group D means Carlow are through to the quarter-finals and having already overcome Mary I – they will certainly take some beating.

As for the defending champions, they avenged last week’s defeat – seeing off Trinity College Dublin by 3-20 to 3-12.

Goals from Brian and Michael Corry, as well as a great performance from Cian Lynch, put the Limerick men into the driving seat – but a late flurry from Trinity exposed some weaknesses in the teaching college’s side.

There is still room for improvement if they want to defend their crown this year. A win against NUI Galway would put them through to the next round.

DCU dispatched of the Garda College with a comfortable win, 2-22 to 0-08 the score as they built upon last week’s last-gasp win over LIT. Donal Burke scored the first goal, as they again impressed and proved their worth to go far in the competition.

It proved to be a good round for the Dublin sides in all – as DIT saw off Waterford IT in Grangegorman on Thursday evening.

They led by three points going into the break and rallied well in the second half to take home their first win of the tournament on a 3-19 to 1-19 scoreline, having been defeated by UL last week.
