UL get off to blistering start in the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup

Fitzgibbon Cup

UL laid down a marker in the opening round of the Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup as they claimed a whopping 31-point victory against TUS Midwest.

TUS Midwest proved to be no match for their Limerick rivals, as UL got their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign off to a perfect start on home ground on Thursday.

Clare’s Mark Rodgers led the scoring spree for UL, as he notched three goals and a point, along with Gearoid O’Connor, who bagged a goal and seven points.

UL are now in prime position to progress from Group D of the Fitzgibbon Cup, ahead of their meeting with TU Dublin in two weeks’ time.

GMIT were the other big winners from Thursday.

GMIT also got their campaign to an impressive start, as they secured a 24-point victory against Trinity College to take pole position in Group C.

Eight teams were in action on the opening day of the Fitzgibbon Cup on Wednesday, in four fixtures that were far more competitive than Thursday’s fare.

Reigning champions UCC got off to a winning start against Mary Immaculate College in Group A, although it was a brave effort from the Limerick side, who lost by five points.

NUIG claimed a three-point win against UCD in the same group, which has been dubbed as the “hardest group in the Fitzgibbon Cup” by Mary I manager Jamie Wall.

DCU have taken top spot in Group B, thanks to a 10-point victory against Maynooth University in their opening fixture, while IT Carlow claimed a narrow two-point win against Waterford IT.
