DCU and UL laid a marker down to the rest of the sides in the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup as they claimed big wins in the first round of college Gaelic football action.
Reigning champions DCU got their Sigerson Cup title defence off to a fantastic start on Tuesday, as they proved to be too strong for Leinster rivals Maynooth University, claiming a 2-17 to 1-9 win in Kildare.
UL notched an emphatic victory against IT Sligo, as the Limerick side eased to a 20-point win on home ground against their visitors. Kerry star David Clifford led the way for UL, as he scored 1-4 in a routine victory.
Letterkenny IT got their campaign off to a winning start on the same night, as they claimed a narrow two-point victory against 2020 Sigerson Cup finalists IT Carlow.
MTU Cork claim big derby win while Ulster University concede to NUIG.
There was plenty of drama in the Cork derby on Wednesday night, as MTU Cork secured a 0-15 to 0-13 win against local rivals UCC. Cork senior footballer Damien Gore was crucial to the winning side’s efforts, as he scored eight points.
NUIG claimed victory in unusual circumstances against Ulster University, as a serious knee injury to Sean Mulkerrin in the 58th minute saw play halted.
Mulkerrin was unable to be removed from the pitch until an ambulance arrived over half an hour later, and Ulster University conceded the match to NUIG, who led by two points with two minutes remaining.
St. Mary’s University College beat TU Dublin City by four points in Grangegorman, while the smaller college also prevailed in the encounter between IT Tralee and UCD, as the Kerry side beat the Dublin university by five points.
