Kerry legend Pat Spillane has named an All-Stars team made up of the best players to have played Gaelic football in the last 50 years.
The All-Stars are now a significant feature of both Gaelic football and hurling, having first been officially introduced back in 1971.
Spillane was included on the All-Stars football team himself on nine occasions, and has decided to pay tribute to his fellow Gaelic football stars of the past 50 years by compiling his own team for the Sunday World.
The former Kerry star has picked roughly half of the team from the first 25 years considered, with the other half coming from the last 25 years, while he has also not considered selecting himself, or his brothers Mick and Tom.
Kerry and Dublin players dominate the team.
Spillane has chosen five players each from Kerry and Dublin in his team, which is perhaps a fair reflection of the 28 All-Ireland Football Championship titles the two counties have shared between them since 1971.
All five of the Dublin players selected by Spillane played for the all-conquering side of the last 10 years, with 28-year-old Brian Fenton the youngest player on the team.
No current Kerry player has been selected, with four of the five having played alongside Spillane in the great Kingdom teams of the 1970 and ’80s. Colm Cooper is the sole Kerryman selected to have played for his county in this century.
Meath, Offaly, Mayo, Kildare, Cork and Tyrone each have one player represented in Spillane’s side, with Larry Tompkins having played inter-county football for both Kildare and Cork.
