AFL club Geelong Cats have confirmed that young Mayo star Oisín Mullin has signed on with them on a two-year rookie contract.
Mullin, who was named as the GAA’s young footballer of the year 2020, will leave his native county to pursue a career in Aussie Rules, in news that will come as a blow to Mayo.
The 21-year-old was one of his county’s rising stars, having played a crucial role in Mayo’s championship runs both this year and last, and was named in the 2020 All-Stars team in addition to his young footballer award.
The Geelong Cats are ‘thrilled’ to have signed Oisín Mullin.
Geelong’s recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells was delighted to announce that they had signed Mullin, explaining that they have a “strong plan in place” to ensure that his switch to Aussie Rules goes smoothly.
“Oisín is a very athletic and talented prospect, and we are thrilled he has chosen to join the Cats as he transitions to AFL,” Wells said.
“Oisín has already established himself as an elite player in the GAA, and it is a big step to make the move to Australia. We have a strong plan in place around his development and transition to football.”

Strong Irish presence at the Geelong Cats.
Mullin will have two Irish team mates at Geelong, with Laois native Zach Tuohy and Kerry man Mark O’Connor currently plying their trade with the Cats.
Fellow Mayo native Rachel Kearns also signed on with Geelong in the summer, and will hope to play for the club for the first time in next year’s AFLW season.
Geelong performed well in this year’s AFL, having come third in the table, and securing their place in the play offs. The Cats reached the preliminary finals, but suffered a heavy loss to eventual champions Melbourne in their last four encounter.
Nonetheless, they are one of the top clubs in Australia, and Mullin’s development will be helped along by the likes of Tuohy and O’Connor, who have played a major role in their side’s success in recent years.
