Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup quarter-finalists confirmed after dramatic round of action

Sigerson Cup

The eight quarter-finalists for this year’s Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup have now been decided, after a number of close-fought battles in the third round.

Two games were decided by just a single point in the third round of the Sigerson Cup, with Letterkenny IT producing the biggest upset of the week against UCD.

It was a low-scoring affair, as the Donegal side claimed a 0-7 to 0-6 victory, which has sent 2018 champions UCD out of the competition at an early stage.

Queens University Belfast claimed the other one-point win of the week, as they saw off IT Carlow by 0-17 to 0-16 to seal their place in the quarter-finals.

Despite having never won the competition, Carlow IT would have been hoping for more this season, having made the final in 2020, which they lost to DCU.

Maynooth snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Maynooth booked their place in the Sigerson Cup quarter-finals in the most dramatic of fashions, as a goal from Paddy McDermott deep into injury time saw the Kildare side claim victory against St. Mary’s University College.

It is the second week running in which St. Mary’s have suffered a last-gasp defeat, as a late penalty from Red Óg Murphy saw DCU snatch a victory against them last Wednesday.

St. Mary’s had the chance to redeem themselves after their gut-wrenching loss to DCU, but there will be no second chances for the Belfast college this time as they exit the Sigerson Cup.

Ulster University claimed a comfortable nine-point victory against MTU Cork in the least dramatic fixture of the round, as they booked their place in the last eight.

The Jordanstown side hadn’t played since the first round, when they lost to NUIG in a game that ended before time was up due to a serious injury, but they proved that they are a side to be reckoned with on Wednesday evening.
