The inter-county retirement of Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper at the age of 33 might not have come as a shock to most, but the outpouring of support since has nonetheless been widespread.
The Gooch won nine Munster titles, five All-Irelands, four National Football Leagues, eight All Stars and is Kerry’s record scorer in championship competition having amassed a stunning 23-283 over a 14-year career.
With his club he won six Kerry titles, five Munster Championships and capped it all off with the club All-Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day this year. After winning just about every title the game has to offer a player of his stature, there simply was nothing left to achieve for the Dr. Croke’s man.
That said, the announcement today did catch some off guard, and they have taken to Twitter in their droves to pay tribute to the man now being dubbed the greatest of all time.
Some did not take the news well.
