Kildare Sensationally Shock Mayo At Newbridge In Round 3 Of Football Qualifiers

It was only confirmed a few days ago that the game between Kildare and Mayo would take place in Newbridge, after much controversy over the venue.

That wouldn’t prove to be the only drama associated with this tie, however. The home side shocked footballing stalwarts Mayo on Saturday evening, prevailing by 21 points to 19 in an instant classic.

The close, intense game was nine points apiece at half time, and was 14 all after 50 minutes, an illustration of the dogged nature of Kildare in the face of their heavily-fancied visitors, who did have a spell in the lead in between the restart and Kildare’s rally, where the home side reeled off five of the next six points when 14 to 12 down.

Wing back Paddy Durcan scored four points and attempted to inspire Mayo to victory, but to no avail.

Neil Flynn and Paul Cribbin starred for the Lilywhites, while at the other end, their defensive unit made two crucial blocks ten minutes from time to deny a goal.

Aidan O’Shea was sent off for a second yellow late on to compound Mayo’s misery, with the Connacht outfit unable to bridge the consistently small gap to Kildare, who advance to round 4 of qualifying as winners.
