The debate is rumbling on.

Former Cork inter-county hurler Dónal Óg Cusack has hit out at the current GAA schedule, following the conclusion of the round-robin phase of the provincial hurling championships.

On Sunday, Cork sealed their place in the All-Ireland phase of the Championship at the expense of Waterford, with Clare and Limerick topping the group.

In Leinster, Dublin missed out as Wexford, Kilkenny and Galway qualified.

As a result, there are now a large proportion of high-class inter-county players who must wait until next year to don their county colours again, but for others, there is a potential for individual seasons lasting near on 12 months.

“I think that the association has been listening too much to the populists agenda..”

While the new structure may have some advantages in terms of players wrapping up inter-county action earlier, Cusack was keen to stress the disadvantages of it.

“All of us are club players, which one of us isn’t?,” he began when speaking on RTE. “We all get the importance of that [the club championship], we get it. But we get the importance of these [inter-county] games.

“These are our shop window and this is what is challenging the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Leinster Rugby and Munster Rugby. To deny there is an ongoing battles that exists there would be foolish.

“I think that the association has been listening too much to the populists agenda, and it needs strong leadership in the association to say we are now getting the balance back.

“Who is this going to serve? Even the player who is playing inter-county could see his season going from January all the way up to Christmas time.”

For the next couple of weeks however, there will be a feast of elite level hurling action to take place between the provincial finals and the All-Ireland phase of the Championship.

In Leinster, Kilkenny take on Galway, while in Munster Clare face Limerick.
