Ryan McHugh’s goal may come to be remembered as the best score of the summer
With ten minutes left to play, Donegal produced a special goal to kill off Galway’s challenge.
Despite taking an early 1-2 to 0-1 lead, the tribesmen proved to be a stubborn opponent for Donegal. Galway employed a defensive system that contained their more illustrious rivals for long periods, and were even ahead early in the second half.
However, as often is the case, Donegal’s persistence and stamina told as they took control of the game as it entered the final quarter.
Leading by three points with ten minutes to spare, the Tír Conaill searched for the score that would see them over the line.
After winning a Paul Durcan kick out, Odhrán Mac Niallais played a neat pass to Colm McFadden, who sent in a perfectly flighted high ball into Michael Murphy. The Donegal Captain then displayed great vision by tapping the ball down to the on rushing McHugh, who put the ball into the net.
