BBC Sport sat down with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to discuss his life and career so far. What he had to say on Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, can only be a good sign.
It’s actually a very interesting interview. Available to read here, Ibrahimovic discusses a lot. We had no idea he nearly signed for Southampton. After a difficult first year at Ajax, Southampton enquired and Zlatan was considering a move away from Ajax. But he decided the Saints would be a step down, stuck it out and the rest is history. He’d probably have been bought by Liverpool had he gone to Southampton, a terrifying thought!
But things get really interesting when he discusses the Premier League.
I follow it. The player I like is Wayne Rooney. For me, Rooney is a fantastic footballer. I can imagine him playing alongside me. For me, Rooney is not the player who scores 40 goals a season. But he is the player who helps his partner score lots of goals because he is working for one, two and maybe three other players. It seems like he has a strong mentality to win – like me he doesn’t like to lose. I think crazy things happen around him also. He is an impulsive guy like me. In football no-one is perfect. You learn from your mistakes and I like that with him. He is himself; I think that is very important. That is one English player I like more than anyone.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic you tease, stop it! Just imagine how potent that attack would be. Ibrahimovic and van Gaal would be fighting before matches, he’d come on and combine some crazy chemistry with Rooney. In fact, that thought is a little terrifying for the rest of the league. Perhaps stay in Paris, Zlatan.
