Worrying Update For Arsenal In Their Pursuit Of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

At this stage it is no secret that Arsenal are in hot pursuit of Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

With Alexis Sanchez having departed for Manchester United, and despite the fact that Henrikh Mkhitaryan came the other way in a swap deal, the Gunners are keen to ensure the loss of their Chilean talisman is not felt too hard by bolstering their attack in the same transfer window they let him go.

Aubameyang is rated as one of the finest attacking players in European football, having been a standout performer for Dortmund since joining the Bundesliga side in 2013.

Playing in a similar style and position to Sanchez, it would almost be a like-for-like replacement.

While it had been widely reported that Arsenal had moved close to signing the Gabonese international in the past week, unfortunately for fans of the north London club, Arsene Wenger has stated the club are “not close” to signing Aubameyang, or anyone else for that matter.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s League Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday night, the Gunners boss had this to say (via The Mirror):

“Confident or not confident, I don’t know.

“At the moment, we have done – we are not close to any deal with Aubameyang or anybody else.

“We have plenty of opportunities in different positions, you know, so the final decision is not made.”

In the meantime, Sky Sports have reported that Arsenal have had a bid rejected by Dortmund for the player.

It is believed that Dortmund have placed a price tag on Aubameyang in the region of £60 million, meaning Wenger and co. must come back in with an improved bid before next week when the transfer window shuts if they are to land their man.
