Manchester City of course have money to spend on Europe’s top talents but Wolfsburg are clearly aiming to prey on that perception by slapping a massive price-tag on Wolfsburg’s Kevin de Bruyne. Either that or they want to make it clear that only insane spending will tempt them.
Just how much is this ludicrous price? €90 million (£63.3m), according to Bild.
Yes, De Bruyne had an incredible second half of the season for the Bundesliga club but to claim that half a season of brilliant football defines a player as a €90 million asset may be a slight exaggeration.
It is likely done on purpose however to ward off interest from suitors such as Manchester City.
The rewards on offer for De Bruyne if he moves would be substantial however, as the Belgium international could potentially earn a massive €83 million (£58.4m) over five years at the Etihad Stadium.
De Bruyne’s agent, Patrick de Koster, became angered this week after his client made a statement indicating he was staying with Wolfsburg at an awards ceremony. The midfielder repeated after the event’s host that
“I, Kevin de Bruyne, will definitely play this season at Wolfsburg.”
De Koster, however, has told the BBC that ‘no decision has been made on his 24-year-old client’s future.’
We must now wait and see the offer City put forward, and they may very well pay the £63.3 million the German club are supposedly insisting on.
