Over the years, Louis van Gaal has enjoyed success at some of Europe’s finest clubs. The Dutchman has led both Barcelona and Bayern Munich to domestic titles and took an average Netherlands side to the World Cup semi-finals in Brazil last summer.
There’s no doubt that Van Gaal is a good manager, however it’s just not working for him at Old Trafford – and here’s why.
Ultimately, United haven’t progressed during Van Gaal’s tenure. The Dutchman has spent over £250 million since taking over the club yet the 13-time Premier League champions don’t look as though they are capable of challenging for the title. Yes, they’re fifth in the Premier League table but the Red Devils aren’t exactly inspiring confidence and neither is their manager, who claimed that the club’s glory days are in the past.
Having said that, United are still well within contention for the title this season. They may not be playing well but after 16 matches, they sit just nine points behind current leaders Leicester City.
However, rumours about Pep Guardiola’s future club are now set to intensify after the 44-year-old told Bayern Munich he will be leaving in the summer. United, Manchester City and Chelsea will all be interested in Guardiola and the Red Devils might be forced into sacking Van Gaal much earlier than anticipated in order to secure the former Barcelona manager.
Guardiola is widely regarded as the greatest boss in modern football and has already won numerous domestic and European accolades. It would be foolish to suggest that he could completely turn United’s fortunes around but, given time, Guardiola is the man to bring free-flowing, attacking football back to Old Trafford. Under Van Gaal, United have been boring to watch at times this season and fans are beginning to voice their frustration.
Van Gaal’s position will be determined by his performance this season. Even if United verbally agree to offer Guardiola the job, they’re likely to allow the Dutchman to stay until the end of the campaign. United’s best chance of silverware will be in the FA Cup this season and Van Gaal has traditionally performed well in domestic cup competitions.
At the time of writing, United are 7/1 to win England’s oldest cup competition this season. Many will be placing their wager with Betway free bets and many will be taking advantage of their offer. United stand a great chance of success if they perform at their very best and will look to secure victory in the third round against Sheffield United next month.
Given time, Van Gaal could get it right at Old Trafford. However, United don’t have time. They simply cannot allow either Manchester City or Chelsea to acquire Guardiola from under their noses and the time to act is now.
If United get Guardiola, they will reassert themselves as a dominant force in English football, however for now, they will have to settle for mediocre performances and hope to scrape a top four berth.
