As Juventus eliminated Real Madrid from the Champions League last night, an ancient feud reignited as Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez are once again set for a collision course in the final.
After The Old Lady defeated Los Blancos last night, the former Manchester United left back was immediately asked how he felt about facing his old foe Luis Suarez. Evra did not shirk away from the question.
A lot of people ask me this question. It doesn’t matter. The most important thing is I play the final, you know.
I am proud to be what I am, I am proud about my colour and I will shake his hand, it is no problem, but I will make sure he feels my presence on the pitch.
Of course, of course [we can beat them]. They are human beings. People forget, on Juventus’ team a lot of players have already won the Champions League.
Barcelona is still Barcelona. I think against Manchester [United in 2009 and 2011] they were more a team, a very strong team. Now they have three players in the front, Messi, Neymar and Suárez, that can make the difference. You can be strong like in the last five, 10 minutes [against Madrid] but these three players can score any time. You have to be ready.
I don’t think I really realised. People said ‘It’s your fifth final’; I don’t realise. The most important is I don’t want to lose another one.
Interesting words from the Frenchman. Having now reached 5 Champions League finals, it is safe to say that Evra is one of the greatest full backs of his generation. And whatever happens in the final, Suarez will ‘feel his presence’.
