Done Deal: West Ham Break Club Transfer Record To Sign £20m Swansea Forward

West Ham United have completed the club-record signing of Swansea forward André Ayew.

Confirmation came on Monday night through the Twitter accounts of co-chairman David Gold and Jack Sullivan, son of other co-chairman David Sullivan, who also revealed the fee to be £20.5m.

The club later confirmed the deal on their own official channel, along with a video message for the club’s fans:

The length of the contract is still a mystery, however. Gold claimed in his tweet that the 26-year-old had signed a four-year deal, but the club statement described it as a three-year contract with the option of two more.

In a statement on the club’s website, Ayew expressed his delight at becoming a West Ham player, revealing that the club’s project is one that excites him:

“I am very proud and happy to be at this magnificent Club. I am happy to be playing for these fans and I hope to make the people very happy here.

“The Club have a lot of ambition and have a great manager. They want to become a bigger Club every year and with the new Stadium and a new training ground, you can feel they are moving onto another level and I want to be part of this project.

“I want to train hard, do my job and show that I deserve to play for West Ham United. I want to give back to the manager and the fans the confidence they are showing me.”

Ayew arrived in the Premier League last summer, joining Swansea on a free transfer from Marseille on a four-year deal. In what was a difficult campaign for the Swans, one which saw them replace manager Garry Monk with Francesco Guidolin midway through the campaign, Ayew scored 12 goals in 34 Premier League games and was named Premier League Player of the Month for August 2015.

He becomes West Ham’s seventh signing of the summer, and indeed their second in the past 24 hours. Earlier today the club announced that Olympiakos left-back Arther Masaku had joined the club, also on a four-year contract.

West Ham begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to Antonio Conte’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next Monday night, before travelling to Romania for a Europa League playoff first leg match against Astra Giurgiu three days later.
