Watch: West Brom’s Salomon Rondon Scores A Beautiful Volley In Southampton Defeat

West Bromwich Albion have had a week to forget this week, and found no respite in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Alan Pardew’s side, having knocked out Liverpool put in the previous round, suffered defeat at the hands of Southampton at the Hawthorns just days after losing 3-0 at Chelsea and the troubling behaviour of some of their players on a training trip to Barcelona coming to light.

Despite all of that, there was a brief moment of magic in the midlands, courtesy of Salomon Rondon. The striker hasn’t been as prolific in front of goal as either he or Pardew would like, but, with Southampton already 2-0 up, he was able to halve the deficit on the hour mark with a stunning volley past Saints keeper Alex McCarthy – evoking memories of Robin van Persie’s top-class trike for Manchester United against Aston Villa in 2013.

It was the Venezuelan striker’s eighth goal of the season but unfortunately for Rondon and West Brom, Southampton held on and progress to the quarter finals.

The next few months could be a major struggle for the club. Seven points from safety and rooted to the bottom of the table, the Baggies are staring down the barrel of returning to the Championship after eight years in the top flight.
