Arsene Wenger Hints An End To Striker Plans And Reveals Where Alexis Will Play

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that he has ended any plans to sign a forward for the club before the end of this transfer window by claiming that Alexis Sanchez would be more than adept in the position.

The Gunners have been the prime suitors in the chase to sign Lyon sensation Alexandre Lacazette, but the French club have been adamant in their stance that Lacazette would not be sold.

Bruno Genesio’s outfit went to such extremes as to demand £60 million for their star asset, which understandably Arsenal shied away from.

However, Lacazette seemed to issue a come and get me plea to the London club, and after scoring five goals in his first two Ligue 1 games of the season, it seemed likely that Wenger would re-enter the fight to sign him.

However, judging by his comments, this will not be the case.

Wenger’s reply raised a few eyebrows when asked if Alexis Sanchez’s long-term future is as a striker.

“I think yes. I think it is worth to try as he has the quality to go behind.

“On the flanks he uses a lot of energy by chasing back and I would like to use his energy sometimes a bit more efficiently by going behind the defenders as he is a good finisher. He has played centre forward at Barcelona. He is technically top.”

Wenger did not rule out future signings, but remained committed to his current group of players.

“I believe a club like ours is focused on giving chances to the players we develop in our own club.

“We have a few strikers who have a chance, if we find the right players we buy. It is not that easy – look at a club like Real Madrid, who have they bought? Up front, it is very difficult.”

Arsenal face Leicester today at the King Power, but will we see Sanchez up front? It could be a bold move from a usually cautious manager.
