Wayne Rooney has rejoined Everton from Manchester United, it has been confirmed today. The arrival of Romelu Lukaku in the opposite direction threw the future of the former England captain at Old Trafford into doubt, and now it is set in stone that he will return to The Toffees.

Everton announced the deal on their social media channels today.

United also had a message for Rooney, who has become a club legend since joining the Red Devils 13 years ago.

José Mourinho spoke of his admiration for the player.

“It is no secret that I have long been an admirer of Wayne; he has been a model professional throughout his time at the club and will remain in the history books for many years to come.

“It is never easy to see a great player playing less football than he would like and I could not stand in his way when he asked to go back to Everton. His experience, focus and determination will be missed and I wish him well for the future.”
