“I made a mistake.”

Wayne Rooney has issued an apology to his family and Derby County after images emerged on Sunday appearing to show the former England and Manchester United captain at a private party.

The pictures garnered attention on social media and they appeared to show the Derby manager asleep in a hotel room surrounded by a group of young women.

Rooney has apologised to his family and his club.

“I made a mistake,” Rooney told Sky Sports News after Derby’s friendly against Real Betis on Wednesday night, a match they won 1-0.

“I went to a private party with two of my friends and from me, I’d like to apologise to my family and the club for the images which were going round and I want to move forward on this.

“I’m grateful to Derby County for giving me this opportunity to get this club back to where it belongs, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure I do that.

“It’s dealt with. I’m looking forward to moving forward and preparing for another game on Sunday.”

Rooney has also faced trouble on the pitch this summer, with Derby struggling to fill their squad ahead of the Championship season, which begins in nine days time.

The Rams are under a transfer embargo and have been unable to sign the nine free agents that are currently training with the club. Rooney has said that he is worried they will not be able to “put a team out to start the first game of the season.”

To make matters worse, Derby midfielder Jason Knight was injured by Rooney in training and faces 12 weeks on the sidelines.
