Done Deal: Watford Complete £7.5m Signing Of Dutch International

Watford have today completed the signing of Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat, the club have announced.

News broke last night that the two clubs had agreed a fee in the region of £7.5m for the right-back, and the deal has been completed as of this afternoon.

The 27-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the club and becomes new Watford manager Walter Mazzarri’s eighth major summer signing.

In his first interview with his new club, Janmaat revealed that he was happy to be back in the Premier League, as well as being part of an ambitious new adventure with Watford:

“I’m really happy to be here, it’s a new adventure for me. I was really pleased that Watford showed interest in me because I wanted to play in the Premier League.

“We [Newcastle] lost three times to Watford last season. They had a good season and I hope we can do the same again this year.

“The club is showing great ambition and wants to improve, and I want to be part of that.”

Janmaat joined Newcastle in a £5m deal from Eredivisie side Feyenoord after he impressed for the Dutch national side at the 2014 World Cup.

He went on to make 75 appearances for the side, scoring two goals, but was always expected to leave St. James’ Park in the wake of their relegation to the Championship at the end of last season.

In fact, manager Rafa Benítez has already planned for life after Janmaat by signing Atlético Madrid full-back Jesús Gámez, while Tottenham’s DeAndre Yedlin is expected to sign for the Magpies within the next 48 hours or so.
