Wilfried Zaha has shown England what they’ve missed out on, with a stunning solo goal for Ivory Coast against Russia.
The Crystal Palace winger played for England at under-19 and under-21 level, as well as twice for the senior team. However, he never made a competitive senior appearance and was overlooked one too many times. This caused him to switch allegiances when he was called up by his country of birth earlier this year.
Zaha has since impressed at international level and the FA may be kicking themselves when they watch his goal versus Russia.
Aston Villa’s Jonathan Kodjia had given the Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead after 30 minutes but Russia were dominating possession and were searching for an equaliser.
That was until the 24-year-old received the ball outside the box, waltzed through the defence and calmly fired into the back of the net.

Current England boss Gareth Southgate is looking to build a brand new England, with fresh faces and a new system. The talented winger could have fit into this new beginning, but was forced to go elsewhere to gain international recognition.
Twitter users posted after his brilliant goal, all seemingly agreeing that the FA made a big mistake by overlooking the Palace star.
Wilfried Zaha’s goal against Russia.. that is some mistake by the FA not to make sure he played for England.

I don’t usually bandwagon english players because they’re mostly overrated, but Zaha is the real deal, shame he’s not eligible.

Ivory Coast outstanding in Russia. Zaha’s goal top quality. Feels like England have dropped the ball massively with him. pic.twitter.com/M0ZL9o80O3

Crystal Palace face a fight to keep hold of him in the summer and with goals like the one he scored against the Russians, it’s easy to see why top clubs will be banging down the door for him.
The 24-year-old has unlimited potential and a bright future ahead of him. It’s a shame for some that he will never get to produce this magic in an England shirt.
