Watch: Watch: Shane Long Buries Liverpool At The Death In League Cup Semi-Final

Liverpool v Southampton - EFL Cup Semi-Final: Second Leg

After suffering a surprise defeat at the hands of Swansea City last week, Liverpool’s season looks to be in danger of coming off the rails at a crucial stage.

Although they might have played some of the best football in the Premier League this season, Jurgen Klopp’s side have consistently struggled when opponents apply pressure and stand accused of being too susceptible to fast paced counter attacks.

And so it proved again against Southampton in the second leg of tonight’s League Cup semi-final. Offered the opportunity of potentially playing Manchester United in the decider, Liverpool failed to break down their stubborn opponents during 180 minutes of football, and fell foul of a Shane Long sucker punch at the death.

Long has not enjoyed his best form in recent weeks, struggling to convert chances that he was putting away with confidence last season.

However, Long didn’t make a mistake against Liverpool, tucking the ball past Loris Karius in the 92nd minute.

With a number of crucial qualifiers to come, Ireland fans particularly enjoyed Long’s finish and hope it represents a return to form.
