Sir Alex Ferguson has just come out with a gushing defence of Arsene Wenger amid continued fan protests demanding the Arsenal manager be sacked.
Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were once the fiercest of rivals in the Premier League. However, as time passed, a growing respect for one another blossomed and in retirement, the former Manchester United manager now holds the Frenchman in the highest regard.
However, although Fergie was able to leave Old Trafford with United fans distraught at his departure, the 75-year-old has watched on with growing discomfort as Arsenal fans have turned on their long serving manager.
Speaking ahead of the FA Cup final, Wenger himself stated that he would never forget the lack of respect shown to him by some fans in recent months. Having had the LMA Manager of the Year Award named after him recently, Fergie also went to town on the ‘Wenger Out’ brigade brilliantly summing up what the Frenchman has done for the club.
‘At the moment of course, the ridiculous situation with the sort of pressure that Arsene’s under. I just wonder, do they realise the job that Arsene’s done?
The way I think, the most amazing thing about him is this; he’s come through a forest of criticism for months now, and he’s never bowed. He’s seen it right through, he’s shown a determination, a stubbornness. And I think when you look at that, that’s a quality, these are qualities that I’m not sure they’ll ever get someone with again.
So it’s quite easy to say, ‘ya, get rid of him.’ And what do you get? Who are they gonna get that can keep that club the way they are and the way they’ve been for the last 20 years?
So, I really feel sorry for him because I think he’s shown outstanding qualities in how he’s handled the whole situation. And I don’t if many could have done that.’
