Refereeing mistakes have been one of the recurring motifs of the Premier League season so far with countless inept displays riling fans across England.
Marcos Rojo should have seen red for Manchester United twice in the space of ten days, Andre Marriner decided the titanic clash between Spurs and City, Ander Hererra was sent off by Mark Clattenburg for slipping and Mike Dean is still about. The list goes on.
However, it might somehow be even worse in Brazil as seen by the bizarre scenes as Corinthians played Palmeiras in one of the country’s biggest fixtures.
As Palmeiras broke, Corinthians midfielder Maycon pulls the attacker’s jersey and his teammate Pablo comes in with a heavy tackle. Either player, if not both, deserved to be booked. Somehow, the referee took neither name but instead brandished yellow and then red in the direction of a completely different player, Gabriel.
Understandably, things got very heated on the pitch after the ref’s mistake.
The game doesn’t restart for several minutes as the team surround the ref despite his persistent refusal to reverse his decision and when the 24-year-old eventually goes off, he’s literally kicking and screaming.
It even makes some of the officiating over here look decent.
