Watch: Newcastle’s Andros Townsend Scores Top-Class Free Kick Against Crystal Palace

With a goal that could have massive consequences for the Premier League relegation battle, Newcastle’s Andros Townsend scored a cracker at St. James’s Park today.

The £12m January signing from Tottenham will have been worth every penny of that transfer fee if this goal proves to be the one that sets Rafa Benítez’s side on the road to survival in Saturday afternoon’s match against Crystal Palace, and what a goal it was too:

The England international bypassed the wall completely to hit a hugely impressive free kick to the far post, leaving Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey with no chance.

In another highly dramatic moment, third choice goalkeeper Karl Darlow saved a penalty from Newcastle old boy Yohan Cabaye ten minutes later, acquiring instant Newcastle hero status in the process. Moussa Sissoko gave the penalty away with a clumsy handball but Cabaye was unable to take advantage.

Newcastle lead Crystal Palace by a goal to nil, and with Sunderland losing and Norwich not due to play until this evening, as it stands the goal will be enough to lift the Magpies out of the relegation zone for the first time since February.
