Manchester United took on Catalan giants Barcelona last night in the fifth and final game of their pre-season tour of the US.
Both teams named very strong lineups for the game with Lionel Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez all starting for La Blaugrana while Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were named in Jose Mourinho’s eleven.Ernesto Valverde’s side
Ernesto Valverde’s side were well on top for most of the game and could have won by a far more convincing than they did. Thanks to David De Gea, a Neymar strike in the first half was the only goal on the night.
Possibly the most talked-about moment from the game, however, was not provided by the Brazilian but by his teammate Luis Suarez. A little over twenty minutes in, as he tried to power past United’s Paul Pogba in midfield, the Uruguayan threw himself to the floor in an outrageously bad dive.
As Paddy Crerand so aptly put it; dear God.
Thankfully the referee wasn’t fooled and awarded Mourinho’s side a free-kick after seeing the striker handle the ball on the floor after he had dived.
Suarez and his side continue their tour of the US on Saturday with a game against fierce rivals Real Madrid.
The Reds flew back to Europe straight after the game and will take on Valerenga in Oslo on Sunday evening. They finish their preparations for the new season in Dublin on August 2nd against Sampdoria.
