Manchester United took on Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening with both sides desperate for a win in the EFL Cup.
United came into the game on the back of an absolute throttling at Stamford Bridge as Antonio Conte’s men ran riot in a 4-0 victory. Meanwhile, Man City arrived at Old Trafford without a win in five consecutive matches.
As a result, Sky Sports rather fittingly labelled the game as the ‘redemption’ derby with both sides determined to turn their poor form around. However, it must be said that United had a clear advantage from the outset as Mourinho put out a side that was close to his strongest available XI while Guardiola sent out a rather inexperienced line-up.
In fact, speaking after the game, the Manchester City manager stated that he was ‘so proud’ of his team’s performance given the fact that he had made 9 changes from the side he had put out in the Premier League last weekend.
However, despite their manager’s pride, Manchester City were eliminated from the competition after a fine finish from Juan Mata separated the two sides after 90 minutes.
