Jesse Lingard has continued the rich vein of form which saw him win Manchester United’s Player of The Month award for December into 2018.
United took on Derby tonight at Old Trafford in the FA Cup and it took an 83rd minute wonderstrike from the England international to see them through to the fourth round.
Fans have recently grown impatient with not only the style of play United are producing under Jose Mourinho this season, but more importantly the results.
Having fallen so far behind Pep Guardiola’s high-flying Manchester City in the Premier League title race, Mourinho has grown visibly irritable in the media in recent weeks. He even ludicrously took a swipe at club legend Paul Scholes for his criticism of Paul Pogba.
To ease some of the tension around Old Trafford, a good run in the FA Cup may be the remedy. The Red Devil’s have already been knocked out of the League Cup and with the league all but gone from their grasp, given City’s incredible, unprecedented run of form, that leaves just this domestic cup and the Champions League as the club’s only chances of silverware in Mourinho’s second season in charge.
There was no upset tonight, although Derby gave an impressive account of themselves at Old Trafford.
Lingard opened the scoring with this belter:
Lukaku found the net to make it 2-0 and that’s how it finished on the night.
