Burnley picked up three points at Turf Moor this evening, a 74th minute strike from Jeff Hendrick proving the difference between the home side and visitors Newcastle.

The Clarets came into the game off the back of a sound defeat to Manchester City, while Newcastle were riding high after a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace and a three-game unbeaten run, but Hendrick’s winner means that Burnley overtake The Magpies in the Premier League table and move to 16 points for the season. They now sit in 7th place, level on points with Liverpool but just behind the Merseyside club on goal difference.

A one-two between Jack Cork and Johann Berg Gudmundsson created a chance for the former, but Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot stopped Cork’s effort. The ball, however, made it’s way back into the path of Gudmundsson, who played it across the goal mouth to the feet of Hendrick. It was a relatively simple finish for the Irish international, who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

The goal was Hendrick’s second in four Premier League games, a tally that equals his total return from his previous 35 appearances according to OptaJoe.

With their World Cup playoff tie against Denmark looming large, the fact that Hendrick has suddenly discovered some goal-scoring form is sure to delight the Republic of Ireland faithful.
