Watch: Ireland Captain David Meyler Sent Off In Championship Today

David Meyler has gotten away with less, and certainly committed worse fouls on Monday night.

The Irish captain has had quite the week. Having impressed during what was a disastrous September international window for Ireland, Meyler was central to Martin O’Neill’s plans against Moldova and Wales.

The Cork native exuded the passion and work-rate that was key as Ireland achieved what had previously looked like an unlikely play-off berth.

Indeed, many of the home crowd in Cardiff felt that Meyler was lucky to stay on the field in the dying embers of the game, after a challenge on Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy. However, the referee was probably right to show him a yellow. It was a booking that means that he will miss out on the first leg of Ireland’s World Cup play-off.

Upon his return to club action today, Meyler continued to catch the referee’s attention for the wrong reasons.

Hull City were playing Norwich, and Meyler was sent off for a second yellow card.

Meyler was tracking back, competing for possession, and in truth it looked to be a harsh yellow card.

The game ended up in a draw, and Hull picked up a point which sees them currently placed in 15th position in the Championship, three points clear of the drop zone and seven points adrift of the promotion play-off spots.

Hat-tip to the Irish Independent.
